An outdoor fireplace is an essential ingredient for getting longer use out of a patio or outdoor entertainment area. But how to design and build an outdoor fireplace?
Though there are many types of outdoor fireplaces that you can purchase and have built, many times the style or design does not quite fit into your idea of the perfect fireplace or your budget. By designing and building your fireplace, you will keep the costs of materials down and not have to pay a contractor to do the job. You will also end up with a fireplace that fits you and your budget. Designing your future fireplace is really not too difficult.
The first step is to decide the size, shape and layout of the fireplace.
The next step is to decide what material you will use to build it. Although there are many materials available to build your fireplace with, I would recommend brick. Bricks are easy to handle, easy to use, replaceable, versatile and give a beautiful look to the finished project. Brick layouts are also easily added on to at a later time if desired.
The third step, you should buy a pre-fabricated fireplace. Then Prepare the area where you will install the fireplace. Build a platform for your fireplace by putting cinder blocks or pouring concrete. Then add tiles along the border to make it look really appealing.
The fourth step, Installing the pre-fabricated fireplace. Outdoor fireplaces are built just like indoor fireplaces except that you do not need to install a damper. Build the chimney as tall as you can and build the fireplace opening a little lower to improve draft, this can shelter the fireplace from wind that can cause smoke to breeze in. Adding a chimney pot can increase the effective height of the chimney. Don’t forget to test the fireplace before finishing it off.
The fifth step, after installing the pre-fabricated fireplace using the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions, you can now add finishing touches to your fireplace. You can add bricks and blocks, then apply cement or stained concrete or paint with any color you like. Add rocks or tiles to finish the look of your fireplace. You can give your fireplace a stucco finish for that Mediterranean look.
