Ventilation and Plants - Help You Reducing Indoor Air Pollution

Filed Under Decorating Ideas | Posted on April 28, 2008

Indoor air pollution poses many challenges to the health professional.  When you just ended your home decoration, there are a large number of toxic gases in your home. Formaldehyde is the most dangerous one.

Formaldehyde is a very common chemical and can be found in everywhere. In homes, the most significant sources of formaldehyde are likely to be pressed wood products made using adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. Pressed wood products made for indoor use include: particleboard (used as subflooring and shelving and in cabinetry and furniture); hardwood plywood paneling (used for decorative wallcovering and used in cabinets and furniture); and medium density fiberboard (used for drawer fronts, cabinets, and furniture tops).

In new buildings or buildings which have been recently refurbished, formaldehyde levels from furniture and furnishings may be high enough to cause signs of irritation. Good ventilation will ensure that formaldehyde fumes remain at a level at which no symptoms occur. In some buildings or vehicles which have large amounts of particle board and other formaldehyde-containing material, such as mobile homes and motor homes, levels may remain high for a long time, so good ventilation is essential.

In addition, some plants can help you reducing air pollution, they can effectively absorb formaldehyde, such as peace lily, bamboo palm, English ivy, mums, and gerbera daisies, all of which are both easy to find and easy to care for, so even if you don’t have a green thumb.
